Permanent Part-Time Parent Support Cousellor

Job Summary:  

Cameray Child and Family Services is currently seeking a Permanent Part-Time Parent Support Counsellor located in Burnaby and New Westminster. This role will provide assessments, treatment planning and counselling for clients of the program.  The Parent Support Counsellor will provide prevention and intervention services to at-risk, inexperienced, new and/or socially isolated parents of children 0-5 years old.  Intervention includes individual counselling as well as psycho-educational and interactive group facilitation.

Hours of work: Part-Time Permanent: 25 hours/week  

Rate: $38.68 / hour  

Reports to: Program Coordinator  

Key Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Interviews clients to prepare case history and background information.  
  • Assesses clients’ suitability to program and makes referrals to other programs or agencies as required.    
  • Develops and implements counselling and intervention programs to assist the clients in determining goals and the means of attaining them.  Provides brief counselling support to clients in crisis.  
  • Teaches skill sets for various levels of parents’ ability within a group room setting.  Plans, prepares and conducts group sessions with clients.  
  • Monitors clients’ progress and provides follow-up planning.  
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of module training and discusses case management and related concerns with therapists, social workers, peers or other professionals.  
  • Provides case management services and consultation to other service providers.  Provides information on and refers clients to other community service providers, resources or professionals as required.  
  • Provides psychoeducation and skill building in areas of parenting skills, such as communication skills, attachment, developmental stages, nutrition, parenting challenges, behaviors and child injury and prevention.  
  • Acts as an advocate for the clients, provides support for them while they are in the program and, as appropriate, provides follow-up support to them upon leaving the program.  
  • Supervises volunteers and practicum students.  
  • Liaises with and/or promotes the interests of clients with other community service providers, professionals or school personnel as required.  
  • Maintains accurate reports and related records and statistics on clients and provides reports to the Coordinator as required.  Ensures that all required documentation is complete.    
  • Attends monthly PSP team meetings and mandatory agency meetings.  
  • Promotes respect and confidentiality among individuals with the program and maintains confidentiality of all families who participate in the program.  
  • Provides outreach services as required.  
  • Participates in PQI and other accreditation activities.  
  • Performs other related duties as required.   

Qualifications:  

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in social work, 2 years of counselling in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  
  • Valid driver’s license is required.  
  • Excellent interpersonal behavior and communication skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.  
  • Non-judgmental and open mind.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Knowledge of group process techniques   
  • Thorough knowledge of the community.  
  • Commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems  
  • Values a nurturing family as the ideal environment for a child  
  • Conviction about the capacity of clients to grow and change  
  • Ability to set appropriate limits.  
  • Knowledge of the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics

Additional Information:  

This position is required to work in a stressful environment.  Managing emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.  This position may require you to work outside normal office hours, depending on the availability of clients.  Counsellors will be expected to work both in-office, and the community.  Must have access to a reliable car.
