Parent Education Program

Welcome to the Parent Education Program!

This program specializes in topics regarding middle childhood and adolescence development, and offers information, practical learning and resources for parents and caregivers who have school-age children. The Parent Education Program provides individual consultation sessions and a variety of educational groups and workshops for families who live in Burnaby and New Westminster, and who have children aged 6 to 18.

The Parent Education Program (PEP) provides intervention and ongoing support services to parents and caregivers, to increase a family’s knowledge and skills for effective parenting to strengthen family resiliency. PEP includes service options of individual parent support sessions, psycho-educational parenting groups and workshops, and interactive parent-child groups. Referrals can be made from any source, including self-referral. For more information, click the links for the program brochure and the referral form.

Who is the program for?

The Parent Education Program is free and is for parents and caregivers with children aged 6 to 18, who reside in Burnaby or New Westminster. The program offers a variety of groups, workshops and individual support designed to strengthen family resilience. Come and build your confidence and skills as a parent or caregiver, while connecting with new friends and other community resources.

What is included in this free service?

  • Group Sessions (in-person or online)
  • Individual Parent Support Sessions (in-person or online)
  • Education and take-home resources on up-to-date parenting practices
  • Bus tickets to attend programming
  • Snacks for day time groups and dinner for evening groups

Group Sessions:

  • 90 minutes or two-hour group sessions on various topics are offered on most week days and some evenings year round, Monday to Friday
  • Educational groups and workshops
  • Parents and caregivers can attend any groups or workshops they are interested in, or feel would be beneficial
  • New group and workshop calendar is provided monthly
  • A fun, relaxed environment to learn and connect with other parents and caregivers

Positive Guidance and Discipline
Managing Anxiety and Stress

Individual Sessions:

  • Work with a parent support counsellor to develop a personalized family plan, identify strengths, needs, and goals
  • Learn effective parenting skills
  • Get informed about healthy child development
  • Receive support as you navigate the challenges of being a parent

We appreciate the support of community organizations and the Parent Education Program actively collaborates with MOSAIC , Family Services of Greater Vancouver, and New Westminster Secondary School .
