Book of the Month: Oh Say Can You Seed

oh say can you seed

Oh Say Can You Seed? is a fun, rhyming children’s book written by Bonnie Worth and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz. This book illustrates the fundamentals of how seeds grow into plants, and the fruits and vegetables that we eat every day with bright pictures and a rhyming structure. Kids will recognize popular characters in the story: The Cat in the Hat, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 created by Dr. Seuss. This book is a great fit for March’s theme of Spring Science, because with the cold weather tapering off comes the opportunity to start planting veggies or flowers for your home or garden as summer nears!

How can parents use this book?

Take your child outside into your backyard, or if that’s not available, a nearby garden or park where there is some soil and plants. You can read the book aloud while you show your child how seeds go into soil and create roots and shoots with the help of water. Obviously you won’t wait for this to happen, but if you wanted to plant a few seeds one day, and then come back the next week and re-visit the story as well, you and your child can see your progress!

A few words in Oh Say Can You Seed? might be completely foreign to your child (some plant vocabulary, which can be skipped over without changing much, e.g., about how seeds have different parts with different names). However, the majority of the book is easy to digest, and since it flows with a natural rhythmic cadence, you can turn it into sing-along fun without much effort.

Oh Say Can You Seed? is a great book for sparking your child’s curiosity in plants, and how things grow with the help of water and the sun. It’s also a way to learn where much of our food comes from and how it gets from the farm to our table, which we often take for granted.
